Help: What does "claiming" a character mean?

Claiming a character is simply a way to mark a character in the guild roster as yours.
You own or "take control" of the character here at EpicMount when you claim it. Once you claim a character, its yours to do with as you wish. You may edit the character's information by hand, update it via the addon, have it leave the guild here and join another one, or delete it.
Usually when the guild founder creates the guild here at EpicMount, the guild roster uploaded. The roster here only contains minimal information: name, class and level. Nothing else, there's no information on what character belongs to which user.
As EpicMount users claim their characters, the roster contains more and more information about each character.
